Saharan dust over Jamaica: satellite analysis and a reconstruction extension

Adrian Dunkley

Research note · Existing authored assignment; source text inspected; calculations and code not rerun

What you will understand

Explain what a satellite aerosol measurement can tell you about an atmospheric column, and what it cannot tell you about exposure at the surface.

FIG. 13-SAHARAN-DUST

Inspect aerosol sampling

Inspect aerosol sampling. Filled isometric scientific teaching instrument. A filter specimen is an analogy for an atmospheric observation. Species attribution, sampling gaps and surface health thresholds need independent evidence.
Constructed teaching model. Use the control to inspect the relationship.

A filter specimen is an analogy for an atmospheric observation.

Constructed explanatory instrument; it is not an observed atmospheric field or a trained-model result. Geometry uses Anatomy (MIT). The paper states its evidence and limits.

Connection to the thesis

Supplies aerosol and observation-support context for a possible coupled environmental reconstruction study. Aerosol transport is outside the present core hydrostatic humidity comparison.

Available inputs and prework

The authored IAI assignment describes MODIS MAIAC aerosol optical depth, SRTM terrain and a Sentinel-5P aerosol-index animation. The described analysis window is 2001–2023.

What the next checkpoint needs

Recover the acquisition and QA masks, rerun temporal summaries, check terrain sampling bias and distinguish aerosol optical depth from surface particulate concentration.

Provenance and limits

Authored assignment text read from Google Drive. Its title says 24 years while its stated 2001–2023 interval contains 23 calendar years; this inconsistency needs correction in the source. The catalogue does not repeat unverified health thresholds or AOD statistics.

This is an inventory note, not a new empirical paper. Third-party research is kept in the reference library and is not attributed to Adrian Dunkley.
